Our firm has four Partners, a total of seven Solicitors and two legal Consultants in addition to an excellent and very experienced support staff.
Richard Hogan
Qualified from National University of Ireland in 1975 with B.C.L and qualified as a Solicitor in 1977.Specialises in all forms of litigation and in particular personal injury and licensing matters. Has been dealing exclusively in litigation for the past 25 years and has established himself as a leading litigation practitioner, representing the interests of a large number of insurance companies.
Martin Archer
Qualified from National University of Ireland in 1973 with B.C.L. (Hons.) and qualified as a Solicitor in 1978 when he was awarded the Allied Irish Banks’ Prize for Proficiency in Company Law. Specialises in Conveyancing and Property matters, Landlord & Tenant, Probate matters and Company and Commercial Law. Member and past Chairman of The Conveyancing Committee of the Southern Law Association and former Member of the Conveyancing Committee of the Law Society.
Thomas J. Carroll
Holds a B.C.L Degree from University College Cork and qualified as a Solicitor in 1984. Became a partner in 1988 and works extensively on Private Client matters with an emphasis on Litigation and Conveyancing. He also works as a mediator having qualified through the CEDR Program.
Peter Kiely
He graduated with a B.C.L and LLB from UCC in 1994. Qualified as a Solicitor in 1997, worked in the Capital Tax Department of Ernst and Young from 1997 to 1999. Joined the firm in 1999 and became a partner in 2003. He has as a background in the area of Conveyancing, Litigation and Family Law Matters and predominately works in these areas.
Daphne Hegarty
Qualified from UCC in 1992 with an Honours Science degree and received Diploma in Environmental Protection from Sligo IT in 1996. Entered on the Role of Solicitors December 1998.
Experience in areas of law including Family Law, Commercial and Residential Conveyancing, Planning and Environmental Law having joined the profession from a different angle Daphne brings new insight and an alternative perspective to the practice.
Ken Hegarty
A third generation Solicitor in the firm. Qualified from UCC with Bachelor of Arts Degree and entered on the Role of solicitors January 2004. Ken brings fresh perspective and innovation to the practice. He has already established himself with a solid client base, particularly in the areas of commercial and property law and has quickly built a notable reputation as being progressive, efficient and providing a high-quality of service and advice to his clients.
In recent years, Ken has been involved in a number of high profile commercial transactions, including commercial court actions for his clients. In addition, Ken has gained significant experience in Employment Law, acting for both Employers and Employees. He has also completed an Employment Law Diploma Course through the Law Society of Ireland.
Michael O’Connell
Michael graduated with a BCL from NUI at UCC in 1970 and qualified as Solicitor in 1972. For over 30 years he has practiced as Litigation Partner with a leading Cork firm, M J Horgan & Sons. Michael then joined Timothy J Hegarty & Son in 2009 as a consultant. He has extensive experience in Commercial Litigation, Labour Law, Defamation, Professional Negligence, Product Liability, Accident and Insurance litigation.
He served for two years on the Southern Law Association Committee and was among the first practitioners in Ireland to identify the need for, and to train in, Alternative Dispute Resolution with CEDR in London. He is now an accredited CEDR Mediator. In a voluntary capacity he has served as both Board Chairman and Director of Cork Film Festival and Triskel Arts Centre.
His family have long history of commitment to Cork City. Michael’s great grandfather established the firm M J Horgan & Sons and acted as Parnell’s Election agent and also as Coroner. His Grandfather, John J Horgan, also served as coroner and as Chairman of Cork Harbour Board [being instrumental in Ford Motor Company locating in Cork in the 1920’s]. Michael’s uncle, Ivor Horgan, also acted as Coroner. Michael strongly believes that social commitment of that nature is vital for the long term good of the city and country.
Basil Hegarty

On the 30th of November 2010, Basil Hegarty retired as a consultant to Timothy J. Hegarty & Son after 46 years in practice and will no longer practice as a Solicitor.
Basil was a well respected affiliate in the Irish legal community. Having qualified in 1964 he went into partnership with his late father Timothy. Through his career Basil was involved in numerous large scale commercial transactions across Europe and the United States.
Having had wide-ranging involvement in many areas of the law he concentrated primarily on property and company law in the later years of practice. On the sporting front he was involved in establishing and advising a number of proprietary golf clubs in the greater Munster area.
Basil was instrumental in bringing the firm to where it stands today, as one of Cork premier legal practices. Through his years in practice he continuously raised the bar both in our firm and within the profession at large.
Timothy J. Hegarty
Timothy J. Hegarty qualified in 1932. He was in practice as a sole practitioner for many years before establishing Timothy J. Hegarty & Son.
He was a long standing member of Corks legal, business and social community with a reputation as an engaging and principled practitioner. His traditions and values are still ingrained in the firms continuing approach to providing a proficient yet personable service.
